Gothic, blackletter, Old English — all the same characters
These three names get searched separately and return the same thing. Blackletter is the typographic family; gothic and Old English are what people actually call it. Historically the family splits into Textura, Fraktur, Schwabacher and others, but Unicode encodes only one blackletter alphabet — the Mathematical Fraktur block — so no generator can give you a genuinely different one. What you can choose is weight: regular 𝔉𝔯𝔞𝔨𝔱𝔲𝔯 or heavier 𝕭𝖔𝖑𝖉 𝕱𝖗𝖆𝖐𝖙𝖚𝖗.
Since the output is characters rather than a font, the look is part of the text and survives being pasted into a Discord display name, an Instagram bio or a game client — none of which offer a font menu.
Which weight to use
Bold Fraktur (𝕲) is the safer default. Blackletter is a dense, high-contrast style, and the thin strokes of regular Fraktur (𝔊) start to break up at username and tag sizes — exactly the sizes people use it at. Use regular Fraktur for headers and longer lines where there is room for the detail to show.
Where gothic text works
The five capitals that come from somewhere else
Unicode’s Mathematical Fraktur block has five gaps in the capitals — C, H, I, R and Z were skipped because blackletter versions of those letters already existed in the Letterlike Symbols block. A generator either drops them or substitutes the originals. This tool substitutes: ℭ ℌ ℑ ℜ ℨ, so you always get a full A–Z.
They come from a different part of the standard and were drawn for a different purpose, so they can sit slightly differently from their neighbours. If your name or tag starts with one of those five, look at it before you commit.
Two things worth knowing before you use it
- It costs double. Blackletter characters live above U+FFFF, so each letter is two UTF-16 units. Most platform character counters measure units — a 190-character Discord About Me holds only 95 blackletter letters. See why your About Me count goes negative.
- Font coverage is thinner than you would like. The Mathematical Alphanumeric block is one that many fonts skip entirely, so blackletter is more likely to show up as boxes on older devices than a style like small caps. See why fancy text shows up as boxes.
Neither is a reason to avoid it — just reasons to check it on a second device, and to keep essential information in plain text.
Gothic vs cursive
These two get confused because both are "fancy script." They are not the same look: blackletter is angular and dense, built from broad-nib strokes; cursive is flowing and rounded.
